Sacred Harp

FULL ARTICLE COMING SOON...

Sacred Harp, a type of shape-note singing, is a tradition of Christian choral music that took root in the Southern region of the United States after the official printing of the Sacred Harp in 1844. It's harmonic origins are largely Gregorian, and it's early development came in conflict with the more accepted classical approach to musical notation. The result is a rough swelling assault of untrained voices singing loudly while tapping feet and waving arms to keep time as they try to harness these haunting phrases of death and longing.
